PDF and Postscript files
Desktop applications (like QuarkXPress) may be saved as PDF, PDF/X-1a or Postscript -- print to file. As when sending desktop application files, all high resolution images and fonts must be included when creating PDF or Postscript files. Use only Type 1 fonts: no TrueType fonts or font substitutions. Images must be CMYK, grayscale or bitmap; EPS format, between 200 and 400 dpi. Do not nest EPS files into EPS files. Files must be right-reading portrait mode at 100% with no rotation. Include standard trim, registration and center marks 1/2 inch outside of the live area. No special characters such as forward-slash, back-slash, asterisk, etc. should be included in the file name.
TIFF/IT-P1 Files
Include final page (.FP), continuous tone (.CT) and linework (.LW) files for each ad. Set the file type to TIFF/IT. All associated files should have the same prefix, with the extensions listed above. No special characters such as forward-slash, back-slash, asterisk, etc. should be included in the file name. After the TIFF/IT files are created, do not rename the files. The .LW files should be between 1,600 and 2,540 dpi (2,400 dpi preferred) and contain no more than 256 colors. The .CT file should be SWOP CMYK and between 200 and 400 dpi. The black text should be merged with the linework file. Files should be right-reading portrait mode at 100% with no rotation.
Desktop Application Files
USA WEEKEND accepts files created in the current versions of QuarkXPress (4.11–6.5) for Mac. Support images may be provided in Photoshop (5.0–7.0), and Illustrator (?CS). Include high-resolution images in position, rather than lo-res images. Images must be CMYK, grayscale or bitmap; EPS format, between 200 and 400 dpi. Do not nest EPS files into EPS files. Include all screen and printer fonts. Use only Type 1 fonts: no TrueType fonts or font substitutions. USA WEEKEND recommends the use of preflight applications to collect for output. Files must be right-reading portrait mode at 100% with no rotation. Please do not send DCS images. No special characters such as forward-slash, back-slash, asterisk, etc. should be included in the file name.
Proofs
USA WEEKEND requires 2 proofs to match the supplied digital ad. We accept Kodak Approval, Creo, Fuji, Epson, Canon, Dupont digital proof, Matchprint, press proof, or similar graphic arts industry contract proof made to the TR001/SWOP standard. Please include standard color bars on each proof. All advertisers must submit a proof regardless of media delivery mode. A laser proof may be used as press guidance for line art and text documents or where accurate halftone reproduction is not absolutely necessary. However, for pages where accurate halftone reproduction is critical, a high-end digital contract-level proof is required.
Digital File Transmission
Ads and accompanying proofs should be sent via overnight delivery to the McLean VA address. Ads on extension may be sent via Wam!Net. Call 1.800.278.1264. At prompt, enter USA WEEKEND site #432101 to establish connection. Follow prompts as indicated and ask for Wam!Net notification upon transmission. Advertisers who are not part of the Wam!Net network may transmit files via the Internet /(FTP)through gateway.wamgate.com. Digital file delivery must be followed up with next day delivery of proofs and files. Contact the publication for details.
General
USA WEEKEND is printed rotogravure, using 4/C process inks. Do not use spot or Pantone colors. Gravure standard colors are to match SWOP colors. The lightest tone that can reproduce a controlled printing density is 5%. Builds that contain values less than 5% of any of the four colors, represent the fade-off, and cannot be reproduced consistently. Maximum total density of any location should not exceed 320%; only one color may be solid. USA WEEKEND is printed on 30# newsprint and is press delivered.
Type reproduction
Fine lettering (thin lines, serifs) should be restricted to one color. For reverse lettering, use the dominant color for shape of letters with subordinate colors spread slightly to reduce register problems. Legibility of reverse type will be improved if type is reversed out of one color. Small reverse or light type on light backgrounds does not reproduce well and should be considered carefully during design stage to ensure readability. Copy should not be less than 6 point bold-face. The word ADVERTISEMENT in 10-point, all caps, Helvetica bold is required at the top of all editorial-style ads.
